MARIJKE BONTINCK

A soot covered veil

One day in December 06 I came back to Belgium from Istanbul and found the house of my childhood and youth burned out. My mother fortunately had escaped unharmed and I had to face a blackened past to sort through and clean up.

The present fly curtain is a visual narrative of the sadness, amazement and hilarity that accompanied the process. I didn't go through the looking glass but passed through a soot covered veil to meet buried memories: an unsettling/resettling experience, somewhat like a curtain moving in the wind or touched by somebody passing through and coming to temporary rest again.

The curtain is made of 91 ( 7x13 ) pieces of laminated photographs. Back and front are different for each laminate. It measures approximately 210x90 cm which is the average size of a door opening.
